THE DEMISE
Followers and friends, lend me your ears (those of you still left)!
The HMVH Corporation BBS is nearing the end of its life in its current
guise. There are many reasons: The lack of callers, RemoteAccess is NOT
Y2k compliant (should be interesting to see what happens when 01-01-00
rolls along), a change in personal circumstances which will invariably
mean another move of premises sometime soon, amongst others. But, fear
not (or rather: Be afraid, be very afraid), as far as we're concerned,
the HMVH Corporation BBS will continue to thrive (?) on the WWW, and
this machine is being kept alive purely for personal amusement, and as
a labour of love. We will, however, continue to add files (which will
eventually feature on the WWW). Watch this space for details!

Sincerest apologies for the absence from the 17th January but, you gotta

DEATH OF A PRINCESS
No, we have no affiliation with the British Royal Family Circus, nor do
we particularly care about their extramarital excursions. What, however,
has touched me was the untimely death of the brightest Jewel in the Royal
Crown through a very unfortunate accident early this morning.
It was quite by chance that I was up the entire night, watching CCN, and
later BBC and Sky, first announce the news of the accident, and finally
the death of Princess Diana later as things progressed.
What makes this entire episode even more tragic is the way in which she
died... I mean, freedom of the press is one thing, invasion of privacy is
quite another! THIS INCIDENT WILL HAVE SOME REPERCUSSIONS, mark my words!
Come to think of it, in a small and insignificant way, this very BBS even
contributed to her death.

WELCOME BACK TO THE LAND OF THE LIVING
After a far too long absence of 6½ months, I have the pleasure to declare
the HMVH Corporation BBS back on line. The BBS wasn't the only thing to
go dying on me, quite a bit has changed in my life since I last made any
sort of announcement... it's been a tumultous six months, I'd say!
Other than a new domicile, a new office and, most importantly, new phone
lines there have been a few modest changes to the BBS itself by way of
additional files and areas, more lenient security levels and a CD-ROM.
Furthermore, Free Area 500 (THUMBNAILS) includes a very varied ensemble
of JPG files, compiled and sorted in no method other than actual disk
order. No, this little BBS is in no way attempting to compete with the
mighty internet... I think we just complement it.

I've decided to re-install the USR 28800 again to see how things develop.

Apologies for the BBS being unavailable over the last few days, but we've
suffered from a SysOp's greatest dilemma: Faulty modem. The USR was only
temporarily re-installed, a 33.6kbps now delivers the throughput.
How well it delivers, though, is fairly debatable since it's quite clear
that connections at home are not at all successful, and I can't exactly
leave the BBS at work all the time now, can I!

be replaced. The remaining parts of the systems appear to have survived.

TIME FOR A NEW LOOK
There's a new design of Menu Screen up for view in the Main Menu.
We'd appreciate some feedback on it.
Inbetween that, we're going through about 500 new text files, mostly
adult fiction and similar stuff, and adding a few doors and new utilities.
Also, in light of the fact that many of the existing subscriptions are
about to expire, we've now reverted back to SUBSCRIPTION, although we'd
much rather call it a DONATION that bribes the SysOp into giving you a
higher security level of around 90 :)

The line's still noisy, causing the USR to refuse handshaking with
anything that's not USR V.34 or generic 2400.
I don't know how I'm going to get this fault sorted out, I might have to
get another 14400 in its place, seeing that's worked when I tried it out.

On a lighter note, the BBS now boasts a total of about 2000 True Type
Fonts for Windows.

THINGS ARE HAPPENING... SORT OF!
The noise fault is still up but it seems like we've established the
reason therefore... I suspect the rectifiers at the exchange. Nice, now
all we have to do is eliminate it! My old 2400 modem was an even worse
performer when I installed it for a day.

space for the new lot I'll be adding one of these days.

A FEW CHANGES IN THE PIPELINE
I have a few changes lined up for the BBS, the first being another hard
drive for the tons of new files I have accumulated. A few improvements in
the layout are also envisaged, but I'd like your advice on what you would
like me to change or add to the system.
Expect, probably on Monday evening, the BBS to be off-line for a few
hours as I install the new drive and start cramming on some files.
Oh, and it seems my phone line's gone noisy again.

After a few hardware problems (don't shop at CTT!!) the system is finally
back on line (at least the BBS is a tad faster now). Telkom are unable to
solve the problem with the noisy line, so I've applied for a digital one
which should be in service within the next few days... I'll keep you
