From the wild days before PNG!
 The HMVH Corporation BBS stores its files in many of the most popular file
 archiving formats, but ZIP remains our defacto standard for any program and
 data files. Self-extracting archives bearing the .EXE extension have been
 renamed to .EX1 files simply to escape the nightly cleanup routines.

 As far as IMAGE FILES are concerned, the .JPG (JPEG) standard is the one we
 employ almost exclusively. However, there are a few things to keep in mind:
 ■ Almost all image files are stored in .JPG format;
 ■ Certain images, such as cartoons and manga, are saved in .GIF format for
   the simple reason that JPEG's compression algorithms are based on colour
   depth and more often than not actually increase the size of the file;
 ■ Those .JPG files date-stamped earlier than 31-08-95 are of a proprietary
   and largely unviewable format which requires the file to be decompressed
   via a batch utility called JPG2GIF.EXE. This program, and its cousin
   GIF2JPG.EXE, are available on the BBS in the GIFJPG15.EX1 archive.
